Once you have made the big decision to make the major leap into the world of online adult entertainment, the first thing you have to do is build yourself a website. There is a lot of thought that is going to have to be put into your site - what kind of site to build, how much it is going to cost you - and traffic. I guess it goes without saying that you will never have a successful site if you have no visitors going to it. So, one of the biggest challenges you are going to face as an adult webmaster will be getting traffic to your site.
There are many ways to generate a steady stream of visitors to your website, visitors that will hopefully either sign up for your services or will click on a banner and go through to another site and sign up there. Either way, your goal is to attract the type of traffic that is going to pay, either you or another site, which will then pay you a commission. Just creating a massive stream of traffic through to your site, traffic that does nothing but look around for a bit and then leave, is actually going to end up costing you money in the end, since you still have to pay for hosting and bandwidth (as well as other possible costs) while you get nothing from these surfers in return.
Now, where to get this valuable traffic, where to find the surfers with the open wallet and willing credit cards? If we all knew that, we would all be rich. The thing is, there isn't any simple way to just snap your fingers and make it happen. But, there are a lot of various options available to you - some will work and some will not - your goal is to keep trying as many different avenues as you can find, eventually finding the right combination that works for you and your site.

"How do you know if a traffic buy is a good one? As with any traffic, it is all in the targeting." |
The first thing you are going to want to do to build your stream of surfers is to go after as much
free traffic as you can. Once you have built a stable base of visitors, you will hopefully start to make some money. You can then start taking this money and reinvesting it by buying more traffic, thus increasing your user (and hopefully paying customer) base as much as you can afford. While you will need some money to pay for hosting and content and whatever else your site needs, make sure to set some aside for
advertising.
To briefly address the issue of free traffic, there are some major areas you need to go after. To get good and targeted traffic, traffic that is more likely to convert, your site has to be optimized for, and listed on, the major search engines. There are a lot of little things that can be done to get a decent rank on the search engines and all need to be done in order for your site to be found.
Search engine traffic is always good traffic because the surfer is actively searching for something and if you have what they are looking for, they are more likely to sign up with either you or a sponsor.
Another good way to get targeted traffic is to trade links with other sites that are similar to your own. Not only will there be an interest in your site, since the users are coming from a site with content that is like yours, but the traffic is free. And by creating a network of links among a bunch of similar sites, you are creating relevant links that search engines can find. Why do you want them to find these links? Because a lot of the engines, Google especially, use the links to and from your site to help establish your rank. The thinking goes that the more similar sites link to you, and that you link to, the more important your site is and the higher the rank they give you.
Other than search engines, there are the directories, such as the Open Directory (DMOZ). Directories are more of a database of links within categories, that searchers can drill down into to find what they want. There is not much a ranking issue here as making sure that you submit your site to the most appropriate category so that people looking for what you have will find you. You may be able to get listed in 100 categories, but if 99 of them are not applicable to your site, then 99% of your traffic is not going to be interested in what you have, thus wasting your time, bandwidth and money.
Once you have all of the above channels in place and are getting some visits to your site for free, it is time to sit down and think about opening your own wallet and paying for some more surfers. This is a delicate path for you to take, since there are a lot of ways to spend your money and get nothing in return - and you are not doing this to blow all of your profits, right? What you need is a way of thinking, a way to analyze the options and make sure that you are getting your money's worth.
Generally, a lot of the same principles apply to paid traffic as to free traffic, though with some differences. Essentially, with the free traffic, the quality does not really count that much, since you are not paying for it and you don't care as much how well the surfers convert, though you are still aiming to get signups.
You will start to care about free traffic quality, though, if you are getting 100,000 uniques a day without any signups at all and you start racking up a huge bandwidth bill. On the other hand, if you are paying for your traffic, your first concern is going to be just how well they convert.
So, how do you know if a traffic buy is a good one? As with any traffic, it is all in the targeting. If you are running a big boob site, you are going to want to concentrate on traffic that is interested in big boob sites. Surfers that want pissing fetish content are not exactly going to be too interested in your booby content, since that is not what they want to see. You are going to want to search for sites that are similar to your own and get your traffic from them. If a big boob site is selling exit pop ups, for instance, then you are going have a much higher chance of buying a spot with them and converting that traffic on your own site with the same theme.
But, there is a limit to the targeting you can do with the different niches. Even though some sites may have the same content them as your site does, they may not necessarily perform well for you. For instance, if you find a big boob TGP site that is offering banner space for sale, it might make sense for you to buy the spot. But stop and think about it for a moment - TGP traffic is made
of surfers that are looking for free porn.
So, if you spend your advertising money with TGP sites, you are more than likely wasting it. These surfers are not looking to pay for their porn and will thus convert very poorly for you or your sponsors. They are simply not in the market to buy anything, so stay away from them. Not to say that posting your galleries on TGPs is a waste of time (that is whole different article) but paying for ads on them can be very
tricky business.
If you are finding that the search engines are doing well in sending free traffic your way, and you are happy with the volume as well as the quality and conversions, then you may want to look at expanding your search engine approach in a way you can more fully control. I am talking about the paid placement search engines, such as Overture or FindWhat. Not only will you have access to even more search traffic, but you will be able to control your rank and thus the amount of clicks you receive - for a price.
Paid placement engines work on the principle where you bid a certain amount for a certain rank. The higher you are willing to bid, the higher the rank you get and the more clicks your link will receive. You do have to be careful with paid placement engines though, since if you bid a high price for the number one spot, you could end up getting an awful lot of clicks that you have to pay that high bid price for.
You have to carefully estimate the number of clicks a certain bid and rank for a certain term is going to get for you, and thus what you will be paying per day or month for that traffic. Make sure you do not bid more than you can afford or you could have a big surprise when you get your bill.
Now, whether you are buying banner clicks, pop traffic or paid placement search engine ranks, you have to be able to justify the marketing cost. You need to be able to sit down and work out a rough estimate as to what you think you are going to receive in exchange for your advertising money. You need to know what the return on your investment is going to be.
Now, this is obviously not an exact science, as there are a lot of variables that you cannot control and a lot of assumptions that you are going to have to make, but you can get a good idea of what to expect.
