Pocket PC vs Palm! - Part #1
    By Titmowse | Writer @ CozyFrog | NOV.10.2004

It pays to be first.

When Microsoft came out with the first user-friendly Operating System for desktop PCs they became number one and they’ve stayed number one ever since. Their OS software comes bundled on millions of home computers and has been for more almost a decade. When it comes to Operating System software for both desktops and laptops, MS still owns.

"Today, buyers are ready to spend money on portable comps. The price of notebooks hasn't gone down much and PDAs are looking better and better. "
Then came the Personal Digital Assistant better known as the PDA.

PDA’s are cool and they’ve only gotten cooler since they first came out in the mid-nineties. PDAs combine the capabilities of a computer with the portability of a cellphone. You can keep addresses, files, games and entire e-books on a PDA. You can use your PDA to check your email or chat via instant message software. You can make phone calls and surf the web on a PDA and you can do it with a device no bigger than a wallet. You can even search for and download porn on a PDA.

Unlike the home computer and the Internet, it took the PDA a while to catch on with the masses. At first, nobody saw a use for them, as they were no more powerful than a glorified calculator in the beginning. Not to mention the fact that they originally cost nearly as much as a PC. Back then people had to choose between buying a PC or a PDA. The choice was simple. Now practically everyone that wants a PC already owns one. Today, buyers are ready to spend money on portable comps. The price of notebooks hasn’t gone down much and PDAs are looking better and better.

That’s why it pays to be first. When Palm releases their first PalmPilot in 1996, it came with it’s own Operating System software called Palm PC. Microsoft hadn’t yet released an operating system for the Personal Digital Assistant. Today, almost nine years later, most PDA owners have Palm OS on their devices.

However, Palm has been losing users of the Palm OS ever since Microsoft came out with a PDA platform. Presently, that platform (Operating System) is named Pocket PC. While both PDA platforms have comparable capabilities, there are marked differences that we will compare in part two of this article.

Right now, we’ll explore the reasons why people would choose a Palm device as opposed to a Microsoft-based device.

Another compelling reason why more people own PDAs with Palm OS is because more people buy PDAs that come bundled with Palm OS. Why is this? Price, dear froggers.

At the moment, Palm owns and produces both the Palm brand and the Handspring brand of PDAs. They also have a partnership with Sony. But the meat of the matter is that Palms and Handsprings cost less than PDAs with Pocket PC. You can get a Palm Zire21 for about a hundred bucks. Most Pocket PC devices start out costing around three hundred dollars.

In case you don’t know this, there are ten of thousands of perverts out there using their PDAs to surf the web and RSS feeds for adult content. As the units and connectivity improve so will the zeal to snag dirty pictures, stories and inevitably streaming video. PDAs are more private than the desktop or the laptop. There’s less chance the wife will catch you trolling for anal excitement on a PDA. That nosey fucker in the seat next to you on the plane can’t view your screen if you tilt your PDA away from view. There are already companies that produce content for PDA traffic and some of them have been successful at it for a few years. You don’t have to create PDA porn but if you think you should, now’s the time to get in on the ground floor.

In part two of this article we will compare the Pocket PC OS vs the Palm OS. It’s important to know the proficiency of each so you can create content for both.

Nobody’s knocking desktops and laptops here. If PDAs become more used than PCs and notebooks, it won’t be anytime soon. Just the same, if you had the chance to get involved in an untapped market and you didn’t, you’d be pissed, wouldn’t you?

It pays to be first or at least one of the first.
