    Time to MOVE!
    By Titmowse | Writer @ CozyFrog | AUG.02.2007

Here I sit. My ass is numb and my eyes are doing that funny, blurry thing. I haven’t breathed fresh air in over 24 hours and did I mention my ass is numb? Oh well, guess I better go make another cup of coffee.

Sigh. Do you think that maybe I am too sedentary? Frankly I don’t know what to think. My brain has gone as numb as my ass.

Here’s the thing. Working from home is great. I don’t have to dress up. I don’t have to dress at all. I can work any hour of the day I choose. I can work with the television on. I can work while I’m downing shots of Tequila. I can work, totally nude, with CNN blaring and a bottle of Cuervo Gold right next to my monitor. I can sleep during the day and work during the night. I can chat with the boss through IM or on the phone. I can do my content purchasing and statistic tracking without ever leaving my chair. I spend hours and hours and hours sitting before my computer and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am self-employed and I telecommute. Nobody can make me do anything I don’t want to do and that includes exercise.

"All I know is that you and I have got do something to shake off our very common problem. Adult webmasters work hard but propelling our bodies is not part of the job description."
Granted, adult webmasters don’t have a corner on the sedentary lifestyle. Office workers have been perfecting it for about a hundred years. Then again, at least office workers get out of bed, clean up, change into presentable clothes and walk to their cars five days a week. I won’t leave my house unless I run out of coffee or toilet paper. If you’re like me, then it’s very possible you too are beginning to suffer the consequences of inaction.

Do your feet and legs fall asleep regularly? Are you beginning to experience headaches on a consistent basis? Did the recent walk you took, from the mall to your car, wear you out? Are your pants a lot tighter? Have you been buying larger sizes? Do you feel a general sense of blah and bleh?

My dear fellow adult webmasters, we need to MOVE. We need to groan out of our chairs and get on our feet. We need to get our hearts pumping and our synapses re-charged. We need to slather on the sunscreen, put on some clothes and walk outside our collective front doors. We need real air and real sunshine. We need to feel our feet hitting the ground and our limbs swaying to the rhythm of our steps. We need to MOVE. MOVE. MOVE.

I Know. I’m an old person. Of course I’m flabby, out of breath and stiff as a board. Maybe I’m just speaking for aged adult webmasters who feel the pangs of immovable flesh more than the young. Could be that my hundreds of catatonic sessions in front of my monitor would have less effect on my if I were 20 years younger. Except that when I was 20 years younger, I was running around restaurants and nightclubs for a living. I was pretty damned healthy going into this profession. Now I’m a creaking, fuzzy-eyed, pasty, wheezy chubby wreck. I take a walk to and from a store five blocks away and by the time I get home, I’m exhausted. That’s just not right. And it shouldn’t be right for you, no matter what your age.

Nobody admits it, but we all want to get old because none of us wants to die. We want to live long and we want to enjoy the fruits of our years of hard work and wise actions. You know as well as I that sitting around in a chair for 12-16 hours a day is bad for you, especially if that is all you do. Come on. You know you’ve got to MOVE.

Believe me. I know how Zen that computer chair can be. I’ve been at this for over ten years and the web still fascinates me. Every bit of it including this industry. I love to spend hours building a new website. Lately I’ve been learning the Linux-based operating system, Ubuntu. I’ve killed weeks on it and not moved from my monitor for whole days. None of that matters. Like you, I have to suck it up and put some clothes on. I have to comb my hair, wash my face and get the hell out of my self-employed prison. You and I have to do one of the most important things a human must do. We have to MOVE.

Nobody is telling you to join a gym or hire a personal trainer. I am not qualified to recommend any kind of exercise. All I know is that you and I have got do something to shake off our very common problem. Adult webmasters work hard but propelling our bodies is not part of the job description.

Stand up. Do some running in place. Maybe some stretches and bends. Practice some controlled breathing. Better yet, go outside and take a walk. Reconnect with more than just your body. Enter the world by exiting your house. You’ve been too still for too long. Do yourself a service and a favor: MOVE.
