It's pretty easy to get swept up in web culture. For me, it's super easy. I live in a small town with almost no collective culture except for churchgoers and college students. Just the same, I think my Internet absorption has begun to affect my view of my other connection to the outside world: satellite television.
Let me explain. When I sit in front of the television after having spent a half day on the web, it takes me about 15 minutes to reorient myself back to the way the mass media operates offline. Perhaps the most unnerving experience I have is when I see commercials for 1-900-sex lines. I have to pinch myself and scratch my head...
"People use phones...to talk? People make money from sex...on the phone? But phone is for modem and DSL modem! Phone not for talk! Phone for Internet! Me need nap."

"People still pay for phone sex. An experience that is wholly unique in spite of the advances in computer and Internet technology." |
After a little while I snap out of my haze. I remember that people do indeed use telephones for talking. People make money talking about sex and other stuff on these telephones. In fact, before the good, great Internet came and hypnotized me, I made a few of those 1-900-phone calls myself. I look at those commercials for phone sex lines on satellite television and am reminded that commercial airtime is pretty darned expensive. The phone sex business might not be getting the attention it did 20 years ago but the concept seems to be as strong as ever.
Ahh, phone sex. Remember kids? It's how your parents got off before cybersex and webcams. You know, it came after stag films, video porn and softcore cable. People went to court and lost their savings over phone sex bills? Ring any bells? It was just like Psychic Network except instead of reading horoscopes the operators talked dirty to you?
Well, people still pay for phone sex. They are perfectly happy to pay an extra $3.00 a minute to have an intimate sexual experience. An experience that is wholly unique in spite of the advances in computer and Internet technology.
Phone sex is simply an adventure unto itself. No monitor. No typing. No fuzzy webcams. No headphones or microphones. No buying drinks and dinner. No clumsy chit chat until the big payoff. Just you and the operator, saying anything you want. You can share a highly personal conversation with another living, breathing horny human. With cybersex, there's the awkward typing. With webcam chat, there's the complicated gear and/or still, the typing. Phone sex is easy. Phone sex is private. Phone sex is a mainstay of the adult entertainment industry.
"Phone sex not Internet! Phone sex not cutting edge technology. Titmowse bad. Make geek's brain hurt!"
Yes, I know. You're all hip and high tech. Phone sex is so last century. Besides, how can a webmaster make money from marketing telephone sex on the Interwebs?
The phone sex webmaster makes money the same way any adult webmaster makes money, by pushing the appropriate sponsor.
Affiliate webmasters are just glorified salesmen and women. Most of us don't create the porn. Most of us sell other people's porn. We do it through free sites, gallery pages and other web destinations. We do it with banners and seductive sales copy. We throw in a couple of digital samples. We explain the value and promise of other company's product and we make a commission off any sales generated through our efforts. One promotes a phone sex sponsor on the web by knowing the product and the audience.
Mind you, different phone sex sponsors operate differently. One will let you promote your own actual phone line if you qualify with enough traffic. Another offers the webmaster a payment for each minute the surfer you send is connected to the sponsor's line. Yet another will allow you to market live phone sex access along with live video chat. Each sponsor lists their own set of rules and you can read some here:
