Mix Niches With Care! - Part #2
    By Titmowse | Writer @ CozyFrog | OCT.03.2004

** Continued From: Mix Niches With Care! - Part #1

"To understand which Niches are complimentary to one another...it helps if you at least have respect for your target audience. "
In part one of this two piece series, I explained that niche content makes money as long as you market it correctly. I told you that there are niches that go well together and there are niches that clash with each other. I showed you that if you present the wrong niche to the wrong surfer, you’ll lose that surfer. There are about a kajillion different sexual niches and while some compliment each other perfectly, some don’t mix at all. I told you to be careful with fusing niches.

I also gave you a task. I told you to ask yourself a few questions. Those were these:

Who is your market? What kind of surfers are you trying to reach? Are they young or old? Do they have a lot of money or a little? Have you tested new niches with them before? Have you ever conducted a site poll with your surfers? Do they email content suggestions to you? Have you tried to sell other kinds/niches of porn before? Were you successful? Is there a niche you have in mind? Could you sell that niche? Would you know how? Will it mix with the tastes of your surfers? Will you have to find a whole new audience?

Take me. I have a site that draws a softcore/humor crowd. The content is adult and I show pics of naked people doing dirty things but the images aren’t really what draws the surfers. It’s the way the porn is presented that brings them to my site. My galleries attract a crowd that is looking more for entertainment than spank material. I’ve had a rather hard time trying to find sponsors offering content/programs that will complement my audience’s tastes. Amateur sites don’t convert for me. Reality sites don’t convert for me. In fact I’ve given up trying to sell regular paysite porn on this page. Right now, I use a sponsor mix of vintage porn, herbal/penis products and adult classifieds. I run a light-hearted adult humor site. My audience doesn’t want flat-out porn.

This is what I mean when I tell you to UNDERSTAND YOUR MARKET. I built a humor site before I understood the clientele. Now I’m figuring out how to sell to them the hard way. It’s cost me a lot of wasted bandwidth, traffic and time. The humor niche is hard to figure out but I’m finally beginning to see positive results through the use of sponsors that sell services complimentary with my niche. So which niches compliment each other? Which ones clash?

    Compliment

Think about it logically, what would appeal to the Foot Fetishist? Shoes? Hose? Garter belts? A little Trampling? How about the Boob fancier? Perhaps a diverse selection of breast types from Tiny, to Massive, to Fake to Puffy Nipples, to Lactating Tits. If you’re promoting Mature content then consider promoting Reality-based MILF sponsors. If you’ve got a softcore Babe page, then look for similar Niches like Celebrity or Centerfold to go with your Babes. Your Amateur Gallery site could do well when with an Amateur Webcam sponsor.

That’s why it’s so important for you to promote Niche content that you enjoy. If you love Asian models and Asian culture, then you probably already know that Anime/Hentai/Manga is hugely popular with Asian adults. If you’re into Body Modification then you know how to speak to the minds of your peers. You know the process is almost, if not more exciting than the look. Why not serve some tantalizing stories of erotic piercing sessions on your site? Why not offer a directory listing locations of Body Modification parlors? How about including some informative articles on current trends and safety measures?

To understand which Niches are complimentary to one another, you don’t have to be an expert but it helps if you at least have respect for your target audience. Either be a fan or get to know your Niche. Look for Yahoo Groups, message boards and postings relating to your query. Read what the lovers of your Niche have to say. Google your Niche and study the sites and articles from those results.

    Clash

You know those free adult hosting accounts where the host embeds image ads promoting their sites? I lost a lot of Mature loving surfers when I tried to promote the Niche on a free host with embedded ads for a Young Babes site. It’s quite apparent that there are Niches that will never be complimentary to each other. While nothing is absolute, on the whole, Straight surfers don’t want to see Gay stuff and Gay surfers don’t want to see Straight stuff. Softcore fans might tolerate a little Hardcore but aren’t likely to be into Double Anal shots and Creampie scenarios. Hardcore surfers may appreciate a few Solo Model sets as long as you provide plenty of Gang Bang and Doggy-Style fucking pics.

Once again, the trick is in knowing your Niche. Find out what turns them on and what turns them off. Set up a poll on your site for your visitors to answer. Provide a comment form. Find other webmasters who deal in the same Niches you do. Ask your sponsors which Niches compliment and which ones clash.

Niche content is great stuff. Sell yours with pride. Just remember; mix your Niches with care!
