"Uncountable surfers don't need porn stars or high-priced studio-manufactured smut. Pornstar content is a saleable niche but Amateur porn is a force." |
The name Amateur porn almost seems a betrayal to this much-revered niche. Hell, the word niche can't do justice to all that is Amateur porn.
The manufacture, sale and presentation of adult entertainment is hardly a new trade. For all of recorded history, people have sold sex or representations of sex. Porn is nothing new. The only thing new about porn is the tools. 30,000 years ago, we carved nasty idols with exaggerated genitalia. Today we create 3-D rendered characters with exaggerated genitalia. Centuries ago we wrote fantastical erotic verse with detailed illustrations of impossible coital positions. In this computer age, we can stream live sex acts over a network to thousands of private homes at a time.
More importantly, any single person can create a profitable adult website - without a degree or apprenticeship or union card. While many adult webmasters have achieved riches, no matter who they are or where they came from, they all started out as Amateurs.
Adult webmasters didn't invent the concept of Amateur porn. Yet, we are the ones that have taken the niche and turned it into an occupation.
Before adult webmasters came along there were very few sources of Amateur smut. Maybe there were half a dozen "horny swinger" magazines or a few dirty newsletters with user-submitted pics. However, in the latter part of the twentieth century the porn industry had become specialized, homogenized. Porn left the back rooms of seedy shops and entered the mainstream. The adult entertainment business evolved into a glossy, silicone factory of blonde hair and collagen lips. Before the advent of the World Wide Web, the standards of porn were as artificial as a copy of Cosmopolitan Magazine.
As we all know, the pioneers of our profession traded and sold images they had either scanned or snagged from BBS and newsgroups.
Eventually our smutty forefathers stopped stealing from the makers of "conventional" porn and discovered a cheaper, easier way to acquire content for their burgeoning ventures: Amateur Porn.
Amateurs created the adult Internet. When I say Amateur, I mean that the majority of original cyber smutmongers had zero experience selling or producing porn. They knew how to create webpages and write and embed scripts. They were geeks. When they approached pre-WWW porn producers/publishers for content, they were laughed at. Instead of paying the phenomenally high prices quoted by the dirty establishment, those same geeks found their own models, shot their own content and built an empire.
The first successful paysites owe everything to models and photographers that were neither famous nor "professional".
When it comes to porn, there are some basic categories. There's hardcore and softcore content. There's straight and gay content. All adult content fits into these basic categories.
When it comes to defining the sub-categories of online porn, we use the term Niche. There's the Bondage niche, the reality niche, the interracial niche and the busty niche. Now we know that there's an audience for just about any type of porn. We know it because we learned it by making money with the original niche: the Amateur niche.
Adult webmasters discovered that millions of surfers are happy watching filthy models they've never heard of. Uncountable surfers don't need porn stars or high-priced studio-manufactured smut. Pornstar content is a saleable niche but Amateur porn is a force.
There's no limit to the ways you can market Amateur to the online masses. In part two of this series, "Amateur Porn Rules"; we'll cover those avenues. For the moment, we'll spread more love for Amateur porn.
When you visit an adult resource site like Cozy Frog, you realize that the adult Internet has become a stable industry. When you browse through the listings for content providers, designers, hosts, billers, sponsors, traffic brokers and scriptwriters, you come to understand how far we've come. Twenty years ago, there was no such thing as an adult webmaster.
We saw the future and we needed dirty pictures to complete the process. Instead of waiting for old-school pornographers to lower their prices, we made our own and we called this content Amateur.
Amateur porn is as responsible for the adult Internet as are geeks, personal computers and Windows. Bow down before it. Amateur porn rules.
